A discourse on the art of brainwave entertainment

Binaural beats are many a time described as “brainwave entertainment.” This being that
these sound waves will alter the frequency level of one’s brain, changing the way it reacts to the
outside world, changing the subject’s emotions, changing the relaxation level of the subject, and
changing others, even including their IQ.

To introduce a short history behind this, scientists have researched the rates of tribal drum
beats and chants that were used to induce healing and spiritual growth, finding many at a
consistent 4.5 beats per minute. While succumbing to this, the listener will undergo a trance
which will change the way the brain works. In 1839, Heinrich Dove discovered binaural beats,
based off of this principle, but the science behind it couldn’t be explained at the time. Over 100
years later, in 1973, Gerald Oster wrote “Auditory Beats in the Brain” and explained how
binaural beats worked.

Binaural beats can be described as two different frequencies produced in each ear. The brain will create the difference of the two frequencies, therefore allowing developers to create any frequency wave they want, even those incapable of being produced by standard headphones.  For example, if a 100Hz frequency is played in the left ear, and a 105Hz frequency is played in the right, the brain will compensate by creating a 3rd, 5Hz frequency.

By creating different frequencies, one can select various states of mind. For instance, the gamma and beta brainwave states induce IQ increases, enhanced perception, and memory increase. A 12 to 40 Hz wave is the equivalent to a beta brainwave. Alpha brainwaves induce a better mood, theta increases the awareness of the unconscious mind (also results in an increase of dreams), and delta brainwaves improve the body by boosting the immune system and even instigating the release of human growth hormones.

Binaural beats can have a strong affect on one's lifestyle, almost
synthetically enhancing the mind and body. Most may deny this fact, and may try binaural beats
to no avail, but the key factors to making this work include clearing one's mind, laying down,
and closing their eyes for at least the first 15 minutes. When listening, headphones are necessary
and less outer noise is recommended.

Where to find binaural beats for download:
    • Under Therapies>Advanced, this site has download links to the pure beats (gamma, beta, etc.) which only last 15 minutes, but can be listened to in a loop since it's an unchanging rhythm.
    • If you browse around the computer store from the left panel, you will find a finely tuned, wide array of binaural beats "doses."  Although I won't post any links for legal reasons, I will say that with a quick google search, i-doser doses aren't that hard to find for free.

    • This one's self explanatory.
  • Also, try Isochronic tones, a similar alternative to binaural beats- http://www.iso-tones.com/tones.html

Use YouTube as an mp3 archive.

YouTube has a very wide array of videos, music videos, and songs, but have you ever wondered how you can save them to your computer to enhance portability?

There are great programs out there such as YouTube Downloader that are designed to allow the user to download raw videos from YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video, and other sites, and later convert it to ipod mp4, wmv, or even mp3.  This is one way to download high quality videos and mp3s from YouTube.

If you don't want the video itself, you can go directly to a YouTube mp3 conversion site which downloads and converts the video directly on the server so you can download the mp3 alone to your computer.

  • The simplest of these sites is http://www.youtube-mp3.org/, which has minimal ads and two easy options: download or share.
    • This site appears to save the mp3s of all previously converted videos, so many times you won't even have to wait for a download button to appear.
  • Another powerful YouTube to mp3 conversion site is http://www.listentoyoutube.com/.  Although there are a few more steps to go through, it implements a very consistent, fast speed when downloading and converting the mp3.

Use Google to find mp3's

In the search box, simply type the name of the song or the artist, and copy this line of code after it:

(mp3|mp4|wma|zip|tar|rar) intitle:"index of" -intitle:"Index of /mp3" -intitle:"last modified" +"last modified" +"parent directory" +description +size -inurl:(htm|html|php) -inurl:index -inurl:free -inurl:franceradio -inurl:randombase -inurl:listen77 -inurl:vmp3 -inurl:audiozen

Linux or Windows 7?

Linux has been an open source, user built operating system since the beginning of the era of personal computers. Apart from being free, it also contains many open source programs that can be downloaded through the package manager, such as Open Office [openoffice.org].
Here are two good linux releases that I have always used:
Ubuntu [ubuntu.com] - this is my current choice because of stability, compatability, and simplicity to use and install
PC Linux OS [pclinuxos.com] - If you love the eye candy and effects of linux, choose pclinuxos. There is a new OS version coming out called the E-17 which will blow any linux lover away with its graphic joy.

Q: What makes linux look so powerful? A: A nice little program called compiz-fusion, downloadable from the package manager after you install your graphics driver.

Q: Why linux? A: If you are a programmer, or just like to mess around on computers, Linux is the OS for you. Linux contains many main programming languages, which you can use to write and build programs right in the system. After you create a program, you can upload it to the web as a package for other people to download and test.

Q: Can I run windows programs in linux? A: YES, through a program called Wine, http://www.winehq.org/, this is possible.
___________________________________________________________________

Windows 7, although not quite as free and visual as Linux-based systems, is well worth the money. If you are looking for a powerful computing platform for gaming or business programs, Windows is the OS for you.

Windows OS's are very good at performing large scale operations at a fast speed.

I personally recommend Windows 7 Home Premium, as it has all the functions you would use daily, and professional/ultimate editions are twice as expensive with only a few more programs

Linux, on the other hand, performs fast on any computer, but when a large-scale windows program is running through Wine, Linux does tend to slow down a lot more than windows. But this is understandable as the OS wasn't meant for that level of performance.

So, which do I recommend? Both

You can download an ISO and dual boot both operating systems, from which you can run any OS on startup through the GRUB bootloader that comes with the linux image

Ubuntu can be installed very easily from within a windows installation through http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-wubi.

some linux classics-

you can also make a window wall and other window selectors based upon the amount of desktops you wish to use. For this cube, I use 4 desktops. There is also a sphere/cylinder view for more desktop access.

some linux themes-

many of these themes require you to turn to the KDE desktop in ubuntu or install the KDE version of PCLinuxOS: (KDE looks more like windows themes)

With the gnome theme + a free linux dock (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CairoDock is a good one), you can recreate an utterly beautiful and customizable mac theme for linux!
